How I Started My Sewing Business

I’ve always loved sewing and designing clothes, so starting my own sewing business was a dream come true. Here’s how I got my little Etsy shop up and running:

Learning the Ropes

When I first decided to turn sewing into a business, I wasn’t totally sure where to start. I did a lot of research online about starting a sewing business, asked other sewists for advice, and took a few workshops at a local sewing store to improve my skills, especially in pattern drafting and tailoring. This helped me figure out the kinds of services I could realistically offer customers as a beginner.

Making it Official

Once I felt ready, it was time to make things official! I registered my business name, got my state reseller permit, and applied for an EIN from the IRS. I also opened a separate business banking account which made things much easier come tax time. My next step was finding liability insurance in case anything happened to a customer’s fabric or clothing while in my care.

Setting Up Shop

I converted our spare bedroom into my sewing studio. I thrifted a large cutting table and got a basic Brother sewing machine and serger from Craigslist. I invested in a nice dress form, a big ironing board, lots of thread, and other sewing tools. I also bought some baskets and storage bins to organize all my materials. Getting my space set up just how I wanted really made it feel like I had my own little sewing shop!

Building a Portfolio

I started doing free alterations for friends and made a few things for myself, like dresses and shirts. This allowed me to build up a portfolio showcasing my sewing skills. I also took styled photos of the pieces I made and shared them on my new Etsy shop and social media. Getting positive feedback from people I knew gave me the confidence to start selling to strangers!

Defining my Niche

Based on the projects I enjoyed making and felt I excelled at, I decided to focus on women’s garment sewing, especially bridesmaid dresses and formalwear. I researched typical pricing for custom wedding dresses and bridesmaid gowns and used that to set my own rates. My first listings in my Etsy shop were for simple bridesmaid dresses with customizable fabric, length, and sleeve options.

Spreading the Word

I told everyone I knew that I had started my sewing business and handed out my new business cards whenever I could. I also introduced myself to local bridal shops and asked if they were interested in working together. My first referral came from a friend of a friend who needed bridesmaids dresses made. Positive word of mouth really helped me get my first few clients!

Growing My Skills

Sewing other people’s clothes forced me to improve my skills quickly! I watched Youtube videos on new techniques whenever I got stuck on a project. I also took a pattern-making class which allowed me to expand my dress offerings. My work got much cleaner and professional-looking the more pieces I completed.

Staying Inspired

I look for sewing inspiration everywhere — especially historical costume books! I even replicated a Victorian bustle gown for myself just for fun. Experimenting with new skills and fabrics keeps me excited about sewing. My customers especially love updated vintage styles with modern twists!

Running a sewing business has been very rewarding but also challenging. I’ve learned so much this first year and can’t wait to keep growing my little Etsy shop! My goal is to be able to leave my day job and focus on sewing full-time. With some persistence, creativity, and attention to quality, I know I’ll get there soon.
